Chief William Roberts Sworn In

  • Chief William Roberts has served our department for over 17 years, consistently demonstrating professionalism, diligence, leadership, and his love for Caldwell. These qualities make him the perfect choice to lead our Police Department. He looks forward to continuing to build a strong future for Caldwell law enforcement.
  • Monsignor Emery, who serves as the Police Department’s Chaplain, offered a special blessing for Chief Roberts and the entire Police Department as they begin this new chapter of leadership and service.

Former Police Director Nichelle Patrick Retires

  • Former Police Director Patrick Former Director Patrick received a proclamation from Senator Kristin Corrado and Assemblymen Al Barlas and Christopher DePhillips in recognition of her outstanding service. We thank Director Patrick for resetting and strengthening our department over the past sixteen months to better serve the residents of Caldwell. She was instrumental in steering the department in the right direction and played a key role in promoting the most qualified individual to serve as Caldwell’s next Police Chief.

PLANTS PRESENTATION from the Bowman's Hill Nature Preserve:

Native Plants that Have Shaped Our History

Wednesday, April 29, 2026 7 PM, by Zoom, Presented by Santino Lauricella

Plants as a group are generally overlooked by our society. Except for food, garden beauty, or possibly building material, many don’t realize the deep connection we have with plants each and every day.

After registering, you will receive a confirmation email with information on how to join the webinar. Participants will be entered into a raffle to win a tree or shrub!

REGISTER by visiting: bit.ly/PlantsZoom

Look for a sign-up for a webinar on RAIN GARDENS. They are a way to address water quality and flooding on your property.

The Caldwell Pollinator Garden is located at 27 Personette Street. It is a chemical-free, native plant garden dedicated to supporting our native insects and birds. The Caldwell Environmental Commission maintains the garden. It is a project of the Master Gardeners of Essex County. We appreciate their support. It is handicapped accessible with a paved pathway through it. The garden is part of Caldwell's Open Space. Please visit often and read more about the pollilnator garden here.

The Commission presented several programs to help our residents understand New Jersey's natural areas and their inhabitants. In August, we presented a program on bats followed by a bat walk in Grover Cleveland Park. In September, we offered the film "An American River" - a documentary about the Passaic River. The DVD is available in the Caldwell Public Library. The Great Swamp Watershed Association led a discussion on our watershed. They offer a wonderful opportunity to purchase native, chemical-free plants tailored to your specific garden. Please visit their website. We were encouraged to keep our water supply clean as it is part of the Passaic River watershed.

In November and January, representatives from The Raptor Trust gave presentations about owls and backyard birds, respectively. The Director of Education was accompanied by Penny the screech owl. The Raptor Trust rehabilitates raptors as well as other native birds. They are located in Millington, NJ and are open the year round. Please visit their website to learn more. We encourage our residents to help feed our birds during the winter and to plant native shrubs and trees to support them all year.

Historic Preservation Commission Submission

The Caldwell Historic Commission was re-formed in 2025 and they’re working on the following:

  • Developing specifications and RECOMMENDATIONS for commercial building exteriors, lighting and signage etc. which will help developers and building owners work with the borough to try and maintain the communities cultural and architectural heritage.
  • Periodically review and update (as needed) Chapter 130 HISTORIC PRESERVATION ordinance
  • Support, interface and share knowledge with other local Historic Commissions
